Odd--even l-dependence of effective internuclear potential. [Shell models, phase shift]

An important finding from resonating-group calculations is that, as a consequence of the Pauli principle, the phase-shift behavior commonly exhibits an odd--even l dependence. A determination is made of the condition under which this odd--even l dependence is expected to be particularly prominent. For this purpose the structure of the resonating-group exchange-normalization kernel is examined in the general case of A + B scattering, where the nuclei A and B contain N/sub A/ and N/sub B/ (N/sub A/ > N/sub B/) nucleons, respectively, and are described by translationally invariant shell model functions in oscillator wells having a common width parameter. 3 references.
