Anodic oxidation of mercury in the presence of chloride, bromide, or iodide in acetonitrile was investigated by DC, NP (normal pulse), and RP (reverse pulse) polarography. For all of these ions the first anodic wave is diffusion controlled in halide and well suited for analytical purposes. The product on the diffusion plateau is HgX/sub 3//sup -/, and up to one monolayer is strongly adsorbed on the electrode surface. The second process involves formation of both HgX/sub 2/ and Hg/sub 2/X/sub 2/(s) which are in chemical equilibrium described by the reaction Hg + HGX/sub 2/ in equilibrium Hg/sub 2/X/sub 2/(s).
