Transient heat conduction in solids subjected to a periodic on-off surface heat flux has numerous practical application, including, among others, the frictional heating of solids and high-energy laser pulses directed at surfaces. In this work, the authors determine the transient temperature variation of a semi-infinite medium resulting from a periodic on-off heat flux at the surface by including in the analysis the effects of nonlinear surface radiation. The effects of periodically applied heat flux on temperatures may be compared to those of a constant heat flux in one to two ways: (1) the total energy supplied over a given period remains the same, but the magnitude of the heat flux is allowed to increased during the intermittent heating, or (2) the magnitude of the heat flux remains the same, but the total energy supplied over a given period is reduced as a result of the intermittent heating. In the present analysis, the former comparison is chosen.
