A horizontal recompletion increased the deliverability of a gas well about six times more than that for a standard vertical well. Oklahoma Natural Gas Co. (ONG) and the Gas Research Institute (GRI) drilled the horizontal recompletion from an existing vertical well at ONG's West Edmond storage site in Oklahoma. Deliverability is the key to the successful operation of a gas storage field. Over a series of injection and withdrawal cycles in most storage fields, deliverability gradually declines. Formation damage, or skin, near the well bore is the predominant cause of this deliverability decline. Horizontal drilling has the potential to increase storage well deliverability dramatically and to reduce base gas requirements, which in turn can lower capital and operating costs. The paper describes the Red Fork reservoir and the plans for the horizontal well.
