Threshold pion production in the reaction p+p. -->. d+. pi. /sup +/

The pion-production mechanisms in the reaction p+p..-->..d+..pi../sup +/ near threshold are studied. The amplitude of this reaction is calculated taking into account the one- and two-nucleon pion-production mechanisms using both the relativistic and the nonrelativistic deuteron wave functions. The role of these mechanisms is discussed in relation to the Adler-Dothan low-energy theorem. The off-shell behavior of the ..pi..N amplitude is studied.
