The buildup factor: A general scheme for attenuation correction

The authors have developed a genera scheme for generating attenuation-corrected nuclear medicine images for use in absolute volume and activity measurements with Tc-99m. The technique relies on the use of a set of measured buildup factors to correct for the effects of scatter inherent in the broad-beam conditions of clinical nuclear medicine and requires anterior and posterior count-rate measurements. This is the first time that use of the narrow beam ..mu.. can be justified and the method will be compared to techniques ignoring the scatter contribution and to those employing effective attenuation coefficients from 0.01-0.13 cm/sup -1/. The buildup factors for four different scintillation camera window setting and three different source sizes are reported. Phantom studies show that the technique provides less than 7.3% error for volume determinations at all investigated depths, window settings and source sizes, whereas much larger errors were found with the other techniques.
