The propagation of lower hybrid waves is studied when the plasma density is affected by the pressure of the rf field. Wave breaking in the absence of spatial dispersion is studied. When the dispersion is taken into account, the wave propagation is described by a nonlinear third-order equation which differs in form from the modified complex Korteweg--de Vries equation (the Hirota equation). Solutions of this equation corresponding to three-dimensional solitons are found.
