A ten channel grating polychromator has been used routinely to monitor T/sub e/(r) at ten different radial locations on PLT. The central value T/sub e/(o) and n-bar/sub e/ are used in conjunction with visible bremsstrahlung measurements at 5235 A to monitor Z/sub eff/. The most important results for D-/sup 3/He minority heating at P/sub R//sub F/ = 4.3 MW at 30 MHz (B/sub T/approx. =33 kG) are: 1) T/sub e/(o) increases from 1.5 keV to 3.5 keV and the stored electron energy more than doubles; 2) intense sawtooth activity is observed with ..delta..T/sub e//T/sub e/,/sub max/approx. =0.32; 3) central power deposition, as indicated by n-bar/sub e/ x dT/sub e/(o)/dt, increases by a factor of ten compared with the OH case; 4) Z/sub eff/ increases by a factor of approx.2.7 to 3 during ICRF (after heavy gettering). The T/sub e/ sawtooth behavior demonstrates substantial minority /sup 3/He ion heating of the electrons at the lower /sup 3/He concentrations in a manner similar to that expected for ..cap alpha.. particles in an ignited plasma.
