Overburden casting is the removal of overburden with explosives. The economic advantages of using explosives instead of mechanical energy are discussed. Factors which must be considered are operating factors (bench height, pit width, borehole diameter, geologic formation) and blasting factors (energy levels of explosive, drill pattern, delay timing, and energy distribution throughout the shot). These factors as well as changes in pit operations brought about by conversion to explosive casting are briefly discussed.
