Inclusive cross sections for ..pi../sup 0/ and eta production near 90/sup 0/ in the center of mass at transverse momenta (p/sub T/) between 2.1 and 5 GeV/c have been measured in 200 GeV/c ..pi../sup +/ and proton collisions with beryllium, carbon, and aluminum targets. These cross sections rise with increasing nucleon number (A) of the target nucleus as A/sup ..cap alpha../, with ..cap alpha.. > 1. The ratio of the ..pi../sup 0/ yields in pA ..pi../sup +/ collisions decreases with increasing p/sub T/. The inclusive production of direct photons has been measured for the same kinetmatic region in 200 GeV/c ..pi../sup +/ and proton collisions on a carbon target. A significant direct photon yield is observed for p/sub T/ > 2.5 GeV/c. The invariant cross section for direct photon production, when compared with measurements from the CERN intersecting storage rings, can be expressed in terms of the variable p/sub T/ and x/sub T/ for the center of mass energy range ..sqrt..s = 19.4-63 GeV, and the x/sub T/ range 0.2-0.5.
