This book is a summary of the work conducted during the second workshop by the Scientific Group on Methodologies for the Safety Evaluation of Chemicals held at the Instituto Superiore de Sanita, Rome, from 12 to 16 July 1982. One section deals with the behavior of chemicals in the organism and reviews the use of animal models and biological monitoring techniques for estimating exposure and predicting health effects. Methods are described for quantitative estimation of risk from exposure to chemicals. Other topics of discussion include: carcinogenesis and mutagenesis; dose-response models; toxicological endpoints; approaches to measuring chemical injury in non-human biota and ecosystems; and recommendations for future research.
