Fracture mechanics of rocks

Book ·
OSTI ID:5931799
Fracture mechanics in geophysics has been patchy and often rudimentary. There was no research level text that gave an idea of the scope and application that fracture mechanics has in helping to solve geophysical fracture problems. Fracture mechanics is widely recognized as an approach to the study of fracture in the earth. This volume is a contribution to that process. Some of the topics discussed are: fracture mechanics and its geophysical applications; joints and shear fractures in rock; the theory of subcritical crack growth with applications to minerals and rocks; time-dependent deformation and failure; and the mechanics of shear rupture applied to earthquake zones.
