Middle East: U. S. policy, Israel, oil, and the Arabs
- ed.
The book provides an up-to-date analysis of the issues and disputes involving the countries of the Middle East. Emphasis is upon United States involvement in the entire region, historically and at present. This fourth edition reflects the significant changes that have occurred in the Middle East during 1977 to 1979. Foremost is the U.S.-sponsored Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty signed March 26, 1979. The book contains chapters detailing the negotiations leading up to the treaty and the Arab reaction to it, as well as the impact of the treaty on the Soviet role in the Middle East. Also included are updated chapters and background information contained in the previous three editions, published in 1974, 1975, and 1977. Following a chapter on issues and policies, profiles are discussed for Israel, Iran, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Persian Gulf States, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Information in appendices present: biographies; chronology, 1945-1979; text of Camp David Accords and Israeli-Egyptian Treaty; and reference bibliography.
