Air pollution, acid rain, and the future of forests. Part I

Journal Article · · Am. For.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5930292
Part I of this study explores the damage to forests attributed to air pollution and acid rain. Studies are reported from West Germany, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, East Germany and the United States. Injuries due to ozone have been documented in California and in the Appalachians. They include reports of dieback, yellowing and loss of needles, and tree death. Tree ring studies of weakened trees have shown that, in many cases, these symptoms are accompanied by substantial declines in growth. Most disturbing is the fact that growth and productivity have also been declining in trees with no visible symptoms.
