This work on production from US Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 at Elk Hills indicates that the increase registered since January 1979 is leveling off and no large gains are expected in the immediate future. Over a recent 30-day period, the field produced an average of 151,782 bbl of oil, including 104,850 bpd from the Stevens and 46,932 bpd from the shallow zone. Output is estimated to reach about 155,000 bpd by late 1979. Further reserve openings are expected in the near future in order to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil. The drilling program on the reserve is continuing, and waterflooding is being used to increase production. Work is being completed on 5 new storage tanks, each capable of holding 250 bbl. A new low-temperature, gas separation plant is also near completion. Other work in the reserve area is reported as including 3 electric substations, a second gas plant, upgrading and expanding the fire protection system, road repair, cathodic protection systems, and pipelines.
