The workshop provided information on problems of air pollution and associated damage to vegetation at the community level. The first section, social aspects of environmental pollution, addressed effects of atmospheric SO/sub 2/ on vegetation; fluoride; minor pollutants; photochemical pollutants; nutritional imbalance; and herbicide injury. Section 2 covered agricultural sources of air pollution and the case history of air pollution at The Dalles, in addition to discussing air quality in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The section entitled assessment of damage, plant indicators and monitoring equipment discusses: meteorology and air-pollution problems in agriculture; detection of air pollution using plants; types and uses of monitoring equipment; economic assessment of plants damaged by air pollution; and models and techniques for estimating air pollution damage in agriculture. The role of Federal and state agencies and authorities covers: organization and programs of EPA National Environmental Research Center, Corvallis; EPA role in air pollution control; and the role of state agencies. Research at universities and an American horticultural survey for ornamental plants best suited to urban environments are also discussed.
