Neutron scattering from /sup 29/Si and /sup 32/S: cross sections and analyzing powers from 8 to 40 MeV
Analyzing powers A/sub y/(theta) for neutron scattering to the ground and first excited states of natural silicon and sulfur from 20/sup 0/ to 155/sup 0/ cm have been measured at incident neutron energies of 10, 14, and 17 MeV. To obtain these data, the O/sup 0/ neutrons from the /sup 2/H(d vector,n/sup 0/ vector)/sup 3/He polarization transfer reaction were scattered from cylindrical samples into two symmetrically positioned side detectors. Pulsing the polarized deuteron beam permitted the use of time-of-flight detection techniques. The corresponding differential cross sections sigma(theta) at 8, 10, 12, 14, and 17 MeV were measured with the same detector system but using an unpolarized beam. Both A/sub y/(theta) and sigma(theta) data were corrected for flux attenuation, angular resolution, and multiple scattering. These data have been described with spherical optical-models and with phenomenological coupled-channels calculations. To minimize the ambiguities in the optical-model parameters, sigma(theta) data for incident neutron energies ranging from 10 to 40 MeV, which were previously reported, were included in this analysis. For both nuclei, a square-root energy dependence on the strength of the real potential was necessary to describe the published neutron total cross sections at energies below 3.0 MeV.
