A converging neutron guide consisting of truncated rectangular cone sections has been designed to focus the neutron beam exiting the curved neutron guide at the Texas Cold Neutron Source (TCNS). The design procedure involved calculations carried out with a three-dimensional (3-D) Monte Carlo code, which traced neutrons through the existing three-channel curved guide into the proposed converging guide. The curved guide transports neutrons by total reflection from a surface coating of [sup 58]Ni. The converging guide focuses neutrons by a combination of total reflection and Bragg scattering from a surface coating of Ni-Ti supermirror layers.
