Precommissioning cleaning of the flags offshore gasline with gel-plug technology

Conference · · Int. Pipeline Technol. Conf. Proc.; ()
OSTI ID:5927708
The FLAGS offshore gas pipeline is a joint venture project of Shell UK and Esso UK that will transport up to 1,000 MMcfd of gas and ca 100,000 bbl of associated liquids per day from the Brent field in the N. North Sea to landfall at St. Fergus, Scot. The process for precommissioning cleaning of the pipeline using gel plug technology is described. Make-up materials in the cleaning train are listed, explaining the function of each component and additive. The process netted an estimated 700,000 lb of debris removed from the pipe wall, and safely suspended and transported it through the pipeline. Flow characteristics of the pipeline were consequently improved.
