Electromagnetic fuel injector with tapered armature/valve

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5927704

This patent describes a fuel injector for supplying fuel to the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The injector includes a housing having a stepped bore extending axially therethrough; an orifice valve plate fixed in the bore of the housing adjacent one end thereof to partly enclose the one end. The orifice valve plate has a valve seat surface and an opposed outboard surface with an orifice passage extending therethrough located concentrically with the axis. A spacer ring is positioned in the housing means in abutment on one side thereof against the orifice valve plate. A solenoid means is fixed in the housing. The solenoid means includes a pole piece with a working surface positioned at right angles to the axis and positioned in axial space apart opposed relationship to the valve seat surface by the spacer ring. A fuel supply is operatively associated with the housing and the pole piece and has one end thereof connected to the source of fuel and its other end in flow communication with the fuel chamber. A tapered armature valve is operatively positioned in the fuel chamber asymmetrical to the axis for movement between the opposed working surface means of the pole piece and the valve seat surface. A spring is operatively associated with the armature valve to normally bias the armature valve into seating engagement with the valve seat surface. The armature valve presents a working surface included at an angle to the axis. An armature locator is operatively fixed to the tapered armature and operative within the spacer ring.
