Powder metallurgy is used as an alternative process to produce Nb/sub 3/Sn and V/sub 3/Ga composite superconductors with large critical transport currents in magnetic fields above 15 T. Whereas for a Cu--30 wt.%Nb +Sn composite the overall current density J/sub c/ amounts to 1.0 x 10/sup 8/ A/m/sup 2/ at 16 T, values in excess of 4 x 10/sup 8/ A/m/sup 2/ (16 T) are observed for Cu--30 wt.% V+Ga composites.
