Fuel gas from wood waste

This wood-waste gasification unit offers an inexpensive means of onsite fuel-gas production for small industries located where wood waste (sawdust, chips, and bark) is readily available. Designed to attach to an existing oil- or gas-burning boiler, the unit produces a 60 to 70 Btu/CF fuel gas at a thermal efficiency of 95%, as shown in pilot-plant studies. The basic process involves combustion of the wood to its volatile products plus charcoal and conversion of the charcoal to carbon monoxide, which is fed along with the volatiles directly to the boiler. Upgrading of the system to produce medium-Btu gas is currently in progress.
