A process design and cost estimate of a plant for the production of pipeline gas from coal by the hydrogasification of coal char has been prepared. The work was performed as part of the joint American Gas Association Project PB-23a and the US Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research, for the development of the IGT hydrogasification process. The basic raw material used for the study is a Pittsburgh seam, high-volatile bituminous coal. The product gas contains 91.8% methane and 5.4% hydrogen with minor amounts of carbon oxides, nitrogen, and argon. It has a heating value (dry basis of 946.6 Btu/scf and a specific gravity of 0.54. Plant capacity is 265 million scf/day, requiring 14.339 tons/day of coal, of which 14,146 tons is process coal.
