This paper is a rebuttal of a previous paper published against these authors' concepts. Katz and Liro (1987) suggest that their spatially distributed thermal-maturity data in the Anadarko Basin be presented only as an isoreflectance map and that regression analysis of vitrinite reflectance versus depth (Cardott and Lambert, 1985) should not be done. They contend that both contoured data and regression analysis of the data have merit and should be used together. The objective in their original study was to delineate the general thermal maturation trend of the Woodford Shale in the Anadarko Basin. They state they should modify the purpose of the regression analysis to state that it is used both to predict vitrinite reflectance of the Woodford Shale at most depths in the Anadarko Basin, Oklahoma, and to estimate the amount of erosion. The point of contention concerns the extent that they can generalize and average these variables to be useful in prediction. They contend that the regression analysis provides a first approximation of the relation of vitrinite reflectance increase with depth. The results of the regression should then be compared and interpreted in conjunction with the isoreflectance map and other pertinent information to provide the best prediction.
