Embedded waveshifting fiber readout of long scintillators
- Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, Newport News, VA (United States). Detector Group
Some calorimeter designs require long scintillators, 3 m and longer. Here, the authors have tested a novel method of reading out light from long scintillators by embedding waveshifting fibers in longitudinal grooves made in the scintillators which are then connected to a photomultiplier (PM). With PMs on both ends of the fibers they have obtained attenuation lengths of over 5 m and light outputs of over 5 photo-electrons per MeV from both sides of a BC408 scintillator with five 2 mm BCF92 fast green waveshifting fibers using a Hamamatsu green extended R580-17 PM. With a reflector at one end of the fibers, they have easily obtained over 10 m attenuation lengths. Also presented are first results using inexpensive acrylic scintillators with this method.
