In one embodiment of the described invention a pressure- responsive anchor is coupled to a well packer that is adapted for actuation by movement of a tubing string. Selectively-operable valve means are arranged for actuation by movement of the tubing string so that until the packer is set, the anchor is isolated from actuating fluid pressures. Once the packer is set, however, the valve means are opened to admit fluid pressures in the tubing string to the anchor. (13 claims)
