One of the chief findings of a just-completed study of capital expenditures and maintenance costs for commercially operating fossil steam-electric generating stations is that the construction costs of new coal-fired units are leveling off. The study, which was funded by Edison Electric Institute also analyzes capital investment costs and field workhour requirements for recently completed fossil and nuclear steam-electric generating plants. The study included 491 commercially operating units, 27% of the total installed electric utility fossil-fired generating capacity in the US, as well as 158 recently completed fossil and nuclear units.
