Testing was conducted for a replacement of prehydrogenation catalyst 5058 (tungsten sulfide). Because no satisfactory replacement for 5058 was found with diluted tungsten catalysts or with tungsten, molybdenum and alumina combinations, tests were undertaken with alumina catalysts alone. With the alumina-molybdenum catalyst, the aniline point of the produced middle oil rises with increasing molybdenum content. With 30% molybdenum oxide in the alumina, a sufficient hydrogenation effect is not obtained. With the alumina-nickel catalyst,the aniline point rises with increasing nickel content. It is less effective than the corresponding molybdenum catalyst. With the alumina-molybdenum catalyst, addition of 3% nickel oxide produces greatly increased hydrogenation activity. The dependence of the middle oil aniline point on the molybdenum content of the catalyst remains the same as with the molybdenum catalyst alone. Alumina catalysts with 3% nickel oxide and 10% molybdenum oxide show good hydrogenation activity. Catalysts of this type (7846) can replace catalyst 5058 very well with regard to hydrogenation effect. With catalysts of activated alumina + 10% molybdenum oxide + nickel oxide, the maximally effective amount of nickel oxide is 6%. Sulfurization with the alumina-molybdenum-nickel catalyst brings only initial success. With the treatment of sulfur-containing products, the catalysts sulfurize themselves in the course of a few days. Pressure sulfurized catalysts apparently adjust thermselves in high pressure to the same sulfur content. Catalyst 7846 yields an unusually well refined middle oil with an aniline point of 38 to 40. This middle oil can be processed as well as 5058 middle oil can over 6434, with a somewhat smaller yield of gasoline. The quality of the 6434 gasolines is the same as with 5058 prehydrogenation. 3 tables.
