Heterogeneity at scales varying from pore size to reservoir size affects all fluid-flow phenomena in oil- bearing formations. Accounting for large-scale heterogeneity in a reservoir model is relatively easy; reproducing small-scale heterogeneity (1 in. to several feet) is difficult. It can be done only by introducing selected values of permeability, relative permeability and the dispersion coefficient in miscible displacement. Overall values describing the behavior of the rock on a scale larger than that of the heterogeneity must be used. The paper deals with the evaluation of such overall values. The various kinds of heterogeneities encountered are described and theoretical and experimental work done on fluid flow in heterogeneous porous media is discussed. It is concluded that parameters describing the overall behavior of such media can be calculated, but do not always represent mean values of corresponding local parameters.
