Discussing diesel fuel production, this report expands on two accompanying tables, one of which gives possible production amounts of diesel, the other of which gives properties of middle oils from prehydrogenation of bituminous coal liquefaction middle oil. Maximum diesel output for a bituminous hydrogenation plant of 200,000 metric tons per year total product capacity was 125,000 metric tons per year, with production of 82,000 tons of gasoline. With an output of 100,000 tons per year of aviation fuel, the diesel fuel output was about 90,000 tons. If a plant with a capacity of 200,000 metric tons of auto gasoline and 200,000 tons of heating oil was readjusted to produce diesel oil, 78,000 metric tons of diesel could be produced with 125,000 tons of auto gasoline and 200,000 metric tons of heating oil. With production of aviation fuel in this situation, the amount of diesel oil was 55,000 tons. When diesel was produced, the quality of the simultaneously produced gasolines receded as the proportion of diesel production increased. In diesel production, the 6434 gas phase was partially or fully shut down. The diesel produced had a cetane number of 35 to 40. The pour point was very low (under 35/sup 0/C), though viscosity of 1.08 degrees Engler at 20/sup 0/C was also low. For production of diesel in bituminous coal hydrogenation plants, the following aspects had to be attended: (1) separate product distillation for 5058 and 6434 operations; (2) the 5058 distillation had to be laid out so that a light gasoline, an intermediate fraction, and the middle oil could be cut out; (3) a lye and water wash for the diesel had to be planned; (4) adequate intermediate and finished product tanks had to be planned. 2 tables.
