Poor production from wells in the N. Bagley Pennsylvanian field, Lea County, N. Mex., when logs indicated better wells, led Texas Pacific Oil Co. engineers to a new application of an acid-stimulation technique that really works. It involves formation of a fracture through use of a thickened fluid or gel, followed by acid injection. The acid fingers through the gel to create flow channels. No propping agent is used in the technique which was untried in the Permian Basin. The first step in determining whether a well is a candidate for a gelled-frac plus acid job is to check the type of rock. If it is a limestone reservoir, experience shows that a retarded acid should be used. If it is dolomite, regular acid is all right. Because the techniques for frac jobs of this type have grown popular in Permian Basin fields, a computer program is now available to help design the jobs from reservoir and well data. While the number of successes has been encouraging, this technique will not make a good well where no well is possible. Tabular data list the following: (1) stimulation treatments performed by Texas Pacific in the area under discussion; and (2) data on representative jobs performed by Halliburton on wells operated by others.
