The NiH/sub 2/ cell traces its heritage to rechargeable fuel cell development efforts. Recently, COMSAT Laboratories and AF/APL programs have resulted in NiH/sub 2/ use in operational space satellites. Two designs have emerged, one oriented to GEO and another oriented to LEO. Accelerated life testing indicates more than 10 years of GEO life and 3 years of LEO life at higher specific power than NiCd batteries. The data base for NiH/sub 2/ is sparse. Design iterations and improvements have resulted in more uniform and reliable cells. Manufacturing capacity is growing. There are two commercial satellites, Intelsat V flights 6 and 7, utilizing NiH/sub 2/ batteries. Projections are made for NiH/sub 2/ use in space satellites.
