Title: Hot water processing of Athabasca oil sands. Pt. 1. Oil flotation in a stirred reactor

Conference · · 155th Amer. Chem. Soc. Mtg.; (United States)

Bitumen can be separated form tar sands in high yields by proper agitation of the hot water tar sands pulp before flooding and flotation. The agitation is furnished by a paddle stirrer rotated at optimum speed. As the bitumen content of the sands decreases, the high yield of froth required greater speed and becomes more sensitive to the rate of stirring. From these studies, it is concluded that the critical step for making frothable oil is the introduction of air into the oil particles and/or the removal of mineral from the oil.
