The Mineral Resources Institute and State Mine Experiment Station of The University of Alabama surveyed existing waste impoundments in Alabama to determine their location, the approximate quantity of coal in each waste pond, and the amount of recoverable coal based on washability tests of representative samples of the waste. Humphreys spiral tests were conducted on Alabama fine coal waste from nine preparation plants of surface mining operations, and from nine preparation plants of underground mining operations. The ash in the samples ranged from 9 to 51%, with a total sulfur content of 0.42 to 1.29%. Coal recoveries (float 1.60 specific gravity) of 84 to 98% were achieved from the different samples. In quality, the products were comparable or superior to those now being shipped from the preparation plants.
