The paper presents a method of determining the proof pressure that can guarantee a design lifetime for Kevlar-49/epoxy pressure vessels. The method is based on the assumption that, when taken from the same population, a statically strong vessel is also stong in stress-rupture. The lifetime data available at higher pressures are extrapolated to estimate the lifetime distributions at lower pressures. In so doing, it is assumed that the lifetime distribution is exponential and that the characteristic lifetime is related exponentially to the applied pressure divided by the average burst pressure. Two examples are given to illustrate the method.
