Book ·
OSTI ID:5915586

The theoretical basis of laser design and operation is explored in an introductory textbook for physics students. Chapters are devoted to a review of electromagnetic theory, ray tracing in an optical system, Gaussian beams, Gaussian beams in continuous media, optical resonators, resonant optical cavities, and atomic radiation. Consideration is given to laser oscillation, laser excitation, semiconductor lasers, gas-discharge phenomena, the electromagnetics of lasers, the quantum theory of the laser, spectroscopy of common lasers, and the detection of optical radiation. Diagrams, graphs, and sample problems for each chapter are provided.
