Compressed air storage to produce about 290 Mw to satisfy peak power needs will start up at Huntorf, West Germany, for the network of Nordwestdeutsche Kraftwerk A.G. The air reservoir is in two caverns, left by rock salt extraction, with a total capacity of approx. = 300,000 cu m. The system can operate at full load for two hours and requires eight hours to recharge the reservoir to its normal operating pressure of 50-65 bar. The air-storage plant, the first in the world to come on stream, was planned by the Mannheim, West Germany, offices of Brown Boveri and Cie. (Switzerland). Although air is compressed prior to storage, requiring some energy, the system uses 35-50% of the energy that a normal gas turbine needs.
