This patent describes a method for determining the free point of a drillstring that has become stuck in a borehole. The borehole extends substantially downwardly through a formation from a top end to a bottom end. The drillstring comprises elements extending along the borehole from a top end of the drillstring at the top end of the borehole through the free point to a bit at the bottom end of the borehole, wherein the elements of the drillstring below the free point are stuck and the elements of the drillstring above the free point are free.
