This research addressed electron transfer in photosynthetic reaction centers. Specifically, the nature of the medium that lies between the electron donors and acceptors in the reaction centers has been studied. The approach was to synthesize four fixed-distance porphyrin-quinone molecules in order to study the effects of changing the orbital energies of the donor, acceptor, and intervening spacer molecules.
