Investigation of quadrupole vibrations of the sun using multizone polytropic models

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Quadrupole vibrations of the sun are investigated within the framework of one-, two-, and three-zone polytropic models. The conditions under which vibrations of the gravitational type are localized in the central region of a star are found. It is shown that oscillations with a period of 2 h 40 min may be the fundamental tone of vibrations of the core and simultaneously one of the higher gravitational (g) modes of the entire sun. A mechanism for the recently discovered decrease in the solar diameter is discussed.
