Raton basin, New Mexico - possibilities for fracture reservoirs in Cretaceous rocks

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5913002

Numerous shows of oil and gas in Cretaceous shales and limestone lacking indigenous porosity and permeability suggest that hydrocarbons may occur in fractures. The reported occurrences of hydrocarbons in the Cretaceous strata of New Mexico's Raton basin indicate that the Graneros shale, Greenhorn limestone, Carlile shale, Niobrara formation, and Pierre shale are all prospective horizons as long as they occur where fracturing may have taken place. Favorable areas for the development of fracture reservoirs within the Cretaceous shales of this basin generally are along the synclinal bend at the foot of the western limb of the basin, along the hinges of smaller flexures, and where the dip changes abruptly.
