Title: California producers take new steps in old fields

One of the busiest fields in California from the standpoint of well servicing work is the South Belridge field 40 miles west of Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley, where Shell California Production Co.'s Kernridge Division is pursuing an active program. There are 2 principal producing horizons in the South Belridge field, and the work handled by the workover and well-pulling rigs reflects the type of activity required to produce the zones. One pay consists of the Tulare sand, which produces 13- gravity oil from depths ranging from 400 to 1,200 ft. The other is the Diatomite Zone, which produces a light oil averaging 28 gravity from depths ranging from 600 to 3,000 ft. Of the 29 rigs, 23 are assigned to Tulare work, 6 to Diatomite jobs. Due to the aggressive development program, Kernridge has increased production to 77,500 bpd from the 42,000 bpd. The biggest factor in the production increase from the Tulare sands is an increase in steam injection. Another factor in the production gain is increased use of hydraulic fracturing in the Diatomite zone.
