Battery collection, three years and counting

Hennepin County, Minnesota developed one of the first comprehensive battery collection programs in the US. A key objective of the program was to divert mercury, cadmium, and other heavy metals found in batteries from a 1,000-ton per day waste-to-energy plant. After three years Hennepin County is clearly successful in collecting a large volume of various types of household batteries and providing proper management of the collected material. The program has been used as a model for other programs and as a source of information for assessing the need for battery collection programs. However, mercury in the battery waste stream is decreasing because of state and federal statutes, and also because of battery manufacturer's efforts to use materials other than mercury, thus stimulating reevaluation of the need to collect batteries.
