Preliminary survey report: Plating Shop, American Airlines, Maintenance and Engineering Center, Tulsa International Airport, Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 1, 1981
A visit was made to the Plating Shop of the American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma in order to evaluate control methods in place at this facility. The plating shop was a separate room within a larger building. The tanks were set on concrete pedestals built up from the concrete ventilation duct tunnels which run underneath each line. Grit blasting and shot peening were performed in another area. There were three hard chrome lines with a total of 22 plating tanks. One line contained electroless nickel and copper plating tanks, and the cadmium for the nickel/cadmium process. There was a nickel line with four plating tanks and a cadmium line. Twenty-eight workers were employed at the time of this visit in the plating shop including two machinists. Work practices includes draining and rinsing pieces over the plating tanks. Gloves were worn when removing pieces from the acid dip and plating tanks, and the workers wore face shields when working around the nitric acid tank. The author concludes that the ventilation system worked exceptionally well. The author recommends that this facility be included in an in-depth evaluation of safety and control measures in the plating industry.
