Huanghua Basin is situated in Tianjin city, eastern China. Several oil fields have been discovered in pre-Tertiary basement normal faulted blocks in this basin. Hydrocarbon traps sealed by basement normal faults can be divided into nine types: (1) a drag anticline in the upthrown block of a normal fault; (2) a trap controlled by a straight normal fault in plan and the flextured strata in the upthrown block; (3) a trap controlled by a curved normal fault in plan and the tilted strata of its upthrown block; (4) a trap controlled by a grid of normal faults in plan and the flextured strata of their common upthrown block; (5) a reverse drag anticline in the downthrown block of a normal fault; (6) buried hills bounded by normal faults in the upthrown block; (7) in the downthrown block; (8) a buried hill surrounded by a grid of normal faults with multiple orientations; and (9) disconformity traps surrounded by a grid of normal faults. The formation of the hydrocarbon traps noted above is controlled by two factors: (1) the sealing normal fault and (2) closure in plan which results from the block-edge folds such as drag and reverse drag anticlines located in the upthrown and downthrown blocks respectively, the regional tilt or rotation of the fault blocks away from the sealing faults, the sealing curved fault or intersecting faults grid, the buried hills, regional clinal disconformity surface. Their controls on the formation of the closure in plan can be lone or combinative.
