Observation of a spin-orbit-induced forbidden x-ray transition in lithiumlike magnesium

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., A; (United States)
High-resolution spectra of delayed x rays emitted by fast foil-excited magnesium ions are found to contain a feature at 1321.45 +- 0.74 eV. That energy is in good agreement with previously measured photon energies for the spin-forbidden radiative transitions (1s2p/sup 2/) /sup 4/P/sup tse/..-->.. (1s /sup 2/2p) /sup 2/P/sup tso/ and (1s2s2p) /sup 4/P/sup tso/..-->.. (1s/sup 2/2s) /sup 2/S/sup e/ in the three-electron ion. Time-of-flight decay curves taken at 25- and 50-MeV ion energies yield a 170 +- 13 ps lifetime, in good agreement with a recently published theoretical value of 169 ps for the (1s2p/sup 2/) /sup 4/P/sup tse//sub 1/2/ state. The authors argue that, for the conditions of this experiment, the 4P/sup tse//sub 1/2/ state is produced primarily by a two-step collision process: 2s-2p outer-shell excitation followed by 1s-2p inner-shell excitation.
