Spectral line broadening due to Coulomb interaction

Journal Article · · Sov. Phys. - JETP (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

The effect of Coulomb scattering on the velocity distribution and on the emission spectra of ions in a low temperature plasma is investigated. It is shown that nonlinear spectral structures are particularly sensitive to Coulomb diffusion of the ions in velocity space. The dependence of the broadening ..gamma.. of saturated ion laser lines, induced by ion-ion collisions, on the concentration n/sub i/ and temperature T/sub i/ of a gas discharge plasma is found. This has the form ..gamma.. proportional n/sub i//sup 1/2/ T/sub i//sup -1/4/ over a rather broad range of variation of the parameters of the active medium. The role of the interaction between the ions and the plasma oscillations in forming the contours of nonlinear spectral resonances is discussed.
