Design optimization of tracking photovoltaic arrays

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5909133

A review is provided of the conceptual design, prototype testing, production, assembly and installation phases of the two Megawatt scale photovoltaic plants constructed by ARCO Solar during 1982 and 1983: 1) The 1MW Hesperia (Lugo) PV power plant and 2) The Carrisa Plain 16.5 MW Power Plant (with an initial phase of over 6 Megawatts completed by Mid 1984). Design and construction details of each facility are provided. The use of large area integrated PV panels mounted on stateof-the-art heliostat type two-axis tracking structures resulted in a significant increase in annual energy production as compared to a fixed array.
