Emissivity enhancement of fused silica for space applications

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5909121

The emissivity of a fused silica solar cell cover at 300K can be improved by suppressing the reststrahlen reflectance band that occurs in the 9 to 10 micrometer range. A thin film spacer layer which is transparent both in the visible and the far infrared portions of the spectrum is coupled with a fused silica one to produce a 10 micrometer dark mirror. In the visible portion of the spectrum the indices of the layers are matched and the average visible transmission can exceed that of the bare substrate. The result is a cover which will operate at a lower temperature than an uncoated one.
