Sizing a thermal storage system of a solar electric plant for peaking applications

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5908650
This paper describes the methods used to size the storage system and formulate the dispatch strategy of a solar powerplant to be used as a peaking facility. The requirements used to establish the sizing and dispatch logic are based upon maximizing the revenue stream and maintaining the operating limits of the equipment. The rate structure used divides each day into three periods on a priority basis. The revenue is biased towards the peak period. The interactions of the receiver, storage, and power generation subsystems are analyzed graphically. The resulting dispatch stratgy is compared with that of a standalone solar powerplant. The results indicate that the annual capacity for the peak period is increased by a factor of 3.
